Walking in the Wicklow Mountains

Walkers of all abilities will find the Wicklow Mountains a true delight. Those seeking a challenging hike may wish to tackle Wicklow’s highest peak, Lugnaquillia, at 925 metres (3039 feet), a glorious mountain which is among the four tallest in Ireland - and there are over twenty other summits of comparable size, just waiting to be explored.  For those seeking a gentler experience, there are plenty of waymarked routes through valleys, forests and moors which are suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The routes are generally uncrowded, and meeting and chatting with other walkers becomes something of a rare pleasure.

The local people are also unreservedly friendly, hospitable and helpful. Pop into any pub or ask for directions along the way, and you are likely to find yourself making new friends - a welcome that is still fresh and unaffected. The scenery is what draws most walkers to Wicklow, but there’s a lot more waiting to be discovered, including quaint villages, archaeological sites and an abundance of historical houses and gardens.

Walk safely…

  • There are no marked footpaths high on the Irish mountains; however, there are two waymarked routes in County Wicklow, winding through forests and quiet mountain valleys. Unless you are experienced at reading maps it is safer to stay on these marked routes or hire one of our qualified Mountain Leaders.
  • Be prepared for Ireland's changeable weather. It is possible to experience sunshine, strong winds and heavy rain all in one afternoon. If you plan to walk in the mountains remember that the temperature will be lower there, the winds stronger and you are more likely to get mist and rain. Make sure you check the weather forecast and plan accordingly.
  • Always wear the appropriate clothing and boots and always bring sufficient food and drink, a torch, a whistle, a personal first aid kit and a survival bag or group shelter.
  • While a mobile phone may be useful in an emergency, it should not be relied on as a safety aid. Coverage is often poor in the hills and countryside!
  • Leave details of your plans with one of our office staff and don't forget to contact that person later to say that you have returned safely.
